“Aaron
and Hur held up his hands; one, on one side, one, on the other.” Exodus 17:12
Batterson
writes, “If we are going to intercede for others, we had better be sure that
others are interceding for us.” We could stop right there on this chapter,
because it’s the bottom line, and the truth, anyhow! In our network of family,
friends and loved ones, there ought to be prayer warriors who are ready,
willing and able to keep us lifted in prayer, as we gird up our loins and “go
in” – on a daily basis.
Exodus
17, starting in verse 8, tells the story of the battle between the people of
God vs the Amelekites. Moses, his brother, Aaron, and Hur, their companion
believed to be of the tribe of Judah, went to the top of a hill. There they
stood while the battle was raging, and as long as Moses’ hands were raised,
Israel prevailed. But whenever he lowered his arms from weariness, the enemy
gained ground. So Aaron and Hur flanked Moses on both sides, raised his arms
and kept them up until sunset. God’s people won the battle that day. What an
excellent portrayal of being covered in prayer. We are engaged in spiritual
warfare, and when we get on our knees, as Batterson puts it, “We pick a fight
with the enemy. And he will fight back.”
Victory
comes when we get on our knees, “bent in prayer and hands raised in worship.” And there will be moments when we are too
weak in faith, strength, and lack the will to pray for ourselves. This is where
a circle of prayer warriors and/or a prayer partner is essential. It is most
effective to have both; and so comforting to know, beyond what can be described,
that there are sincere and loving sisters and brothers in the faith who have
our backs in prayer.
As
we develop our prayer lives, pleading for God’s mercy, grace and blessings upon
those who have asked us to pray on their behalf, let us ensure that we surround
ourselves with like-minded, Heaven bound believers who will, at a moment’s
notice, intercede for us.
